How to set up a grow tent? Guide for Indoor Growers 2020 Updated

Who Should Use Grow Tents?

Grow tents for weeds are designed to keep things simple for hobbyist cannabis growers. As convenient as grow tents are, they’re not designed for huge marijuana grow operations! But for someone who wants 1-5 ounces/month, a grow tent may be the best way to go!

Selecting a Grow Tent
The key to choosing the optimal grow tent size for your operation is going to depend completely on what you’d like to grow. The size of your tent will be one of the most important decisions you make. A tent that is too large will have you wasting money on parameters such as the electricity to power lights, fans, pumps, etc. An area that is too small will crowd plants, causing a battle for available nutrients and water, stunting their potential growth.

Remember that in selecting a tent, form follows function. There is no need to purchase a tent that has more ventilation holes that what you need or a tent that is incredibly larger than your growing operation.

Your grow light is what gives your plants energy for processing the nutrients you’re giving them. They’re one of the most important pieces of equipment you’ll buy, so you have to make sure you choose a grow light that is suitable to your grow tent.

Give them too much light and you’ll end up needing extra ventilation to keep the heat out and will risk burning the plants if they get too close, on the other hand too little light and you’ll have an under-performing garden.

The truth is that there is a sweet spot for grow lights and we should try to be as close as we can to it at any time!

If you’re using an HID grow light a good rule of thumb is that you’ll need roughly 45-70 watts per square feet of tent space. This means that the ideal wattage of HID grow light for a 3 by 3 foot tent would be anywhere from 400 to 600 Watts.

How to set up a grow tent | Extractor Fan?

Once you’ve set the tent up, the first thing that you’ll want to do is set up the extractor and intake fans. First, you have to install the right cables to your extractor and intake fan, as they usually come without the cables attached. Next, you’ll need to attach the extractor to a frame that will allow you to attach it to the inside of your grow tent. Then, attach the frame (and attached extractor fan) to the upper bars in your grow tent using strong clamps or the ropes that come with the grow tent. Once it’s set up, test it to make sure it’s working.

When it comes to the intake fan, you’ll need to use a stretch of flexible aluminum ducting big enough to be able to take in enough fresh air for your plants. Make sure it’s in a straight line.

Best Complete Grow Tent Kits
When it comes to a grow tent setup for beginners, one of the best options can be to start with a grow tent kit. These complete grow tent setups include everything you need to get started in indoor growing. While advanced indoor gardeners will prefer to hand pick each element of their grow tent setup, a grow tent kit can take the overwhelm away from the beginners’ decision-making process.

What temp should my grow room be during flowering? Full Guide for 420 Growers

Getting the temperature right in your indoor grow tent is extremely important as a grower because it affects your plant's ability to photosynthesize and grow.

The light-independent reactions of photosynthesis take place in the stroma—fluid surrounding the grana (stacks of thylakoids) in chloroplasts. These reactions are catalyzed by specific enzymes which work best at certain temperatures. Hence, plants growing in ideal temperatures will photosynthesize faster than plants grown in temperatures that are too high/low.

In general cannabis plants grow best at temperatures between 20–30°C (70–85°F) during the day. Growers tend to agree that the ideal temperature is around 25°C (or roughly 75°F). At night, cannabis plants like slightly cooler temperatures of roughly 17-20°C (62-68°F).

IDEAL RANGES FOR TEMP AND RH
Cannabis grows best when provided with ideal temperatures and humidity levels for each phase of growth. Staying within these limits is the challenge facing the summertime grower.

Flowering
During flowering, low humidity is important. Decrease to 40–50% RH. Over 60% can mean slowed growth and pathogen risks.
Room temperature with lights on should be 20–26°C. Lights off, 16–22°C. The goal is to imitate autumn, so temps need to be kept low.
Late Flowering
During late flowering, improvements to overall quality can be achieved by keeping temps and humidity as low as possible. Humidity under 40% RH is ideal.

Room temperature with lights on should be 18–24°C. Increase the difference between day/night temps by up to 10°C for even better results.

Too Low (Cold) Temps
Colder temps will tend to slow down growth. Temps lower than 60°F (15°C) tend to upset plant growth, and freezing temperatures will shock or even kill a cannabis plant. Some plants continue growing in the cold without signs of stress, but they often don’t yield as well as they should given the amount of light they receive.

Plants are also more susceptible to certain types of mold when it’s cool, especially if it’s damp, too. Mold sometimes occurs after frost melts and gets water all over your plants.

Colder temps and significant temperature fluctuations contribute to the over-purpling of leaves and can also reduce photosynthesis.

Too Hot Temps
When it’s too hot, cannabis can turn into a breeding ground for various afflictions and insects. While the heat does not necessarily kill the plant, it can cause it to be unhealthy. Instead of boasting a cream-colored hue, roots may turn brown and produce a slimy and mushy texture as it rots.

Because of root decay, the plant grows slowly. It concentrates on stretching while its leaves wilt and curl. Meanwhile, its tips suffer from a burn. As a result of its debility, it falls victim to spider mites that suck up essential nutrients and leave a range of orange, yellow, and white speckles.

Can LED grow lights burn plants? 420 Guides

When it comes to using LED grow lights for cannabis, it's important to keep the lights the correct distance from your plants to prevent bud burning and/or bleaching.

Many LEDs work best when kept around 18" or more from the top of the plant, but it's important to ask the manufacturer about the specific LED grow light model since each one is different from each other. The size of the LED bulbs, the way the lenses are made, and the angle the lamp directs light downward all make a big difference on how far your cannabis plants need to be without experiencing "sun burn" from LEDs.

When the light's too intense for your plants it will either cause heat stress or will bleach them with light. Strong grow lights will bleach and/or burn the tops of your leaves, while lights like strong LED grow lights may only bleach your leaves, so it’s important to understand what’s happening to your plants when it comes to these issues. Now, what we should note first is that light bleaching or burning may look like nitrogen deficiencies.

The key difference between the two is that light burn or bleaching will occur on the leaves of the plant closest to the light, whereas a nitrogen deficiency is something you’ll see from top to bottom. A burned and bleached plant will also have wilted and discolored top leaves that are hard to pluck, whereas a deficiency will make the leaves simply fall off. Light Bleaching- If you use LED’s you may not stress your plants from heat, but hanging your LED’s too close to your plants will bleach your leaves. If you let it go on longer, it’ll eventually start bleaching fruits and flowers, which will result in an underwhelming yield.

How Close Should LED Grow Lights Be to Plants?
Indoor grow lights of different power ratings will perform best at different distances. Which LED grow lights are the best for my space? The 240 Watt LED Grow Light is for 2-4 mature plants, with a distance of 12-24 inches from the top of the canopy. The larger 450 Watt LED Grow Light is for 4-8 mature plants, with a distance of 14-30 inches from the plant canopy. These lights also work well for mother plants and cloning.  Higher wattage lights such as the 600 Watt LED Grow Light and the 900 Watt LED Grow Light have a distance range of 16-36 inches from the top of the canopy.

Cannabis grow lights do not emit a great amount of heat like MH/HPS grow lights. LED lights allow for easier temperature control in the grow space and in the space immediately below the lights, eliminating the risk of burning plants with the lights. The ambient room temperature can be 82 degrees instead of the lower temperatures needed to avoid burning plants with HPS bulbs.

So, Are LED Lights The Best For Indoor Growing?
As you can tell, there are definitely some advantages to going with an LED system, but whether they’re the best choice for indoor growing depends on a few factors. For a lot of growers, the low temperature, efficiency, lifespan, size and spectrum of LEDs make them ideal for indoor grows. Other growers, typically those running large-scale operations, prefer HID lights because they provide the most intense light. Of course, HIDs come with their own challenges — they consume way more energy than LEDs, and also force the grower to invest in additional equipment, like protective hoods and exhaust fans. But if your main goal is to maximize the quantity of crops that your garden produces, then HID grow light is probably the way to go.

How to choose the right size grow tent?
Most beginner growers should plan on at least 2 square feet per plant.  Small growers may have up to 2 plants growing at a time. They need an indoor grow tent that’s at least 2 feet by 2 feet for total 4 square feet. It may look too big when they are seedlings but adult plants will fill up that space.

Depending on your grow technique and your attention to pruning and training the plants, you can fit 4-6 mature plants into a 4 by 4-foot tent. If you only use a tent for seedlings, you can pack 16 of them in a 4×4 grow tent.

If you have more than 6 mature plants planned for the future, you’ll need at least a 5 by 5-foot tent.

Is a tent too conspicuous for your circumstances? Consider a grow box. For small spaces and discreet home growing they can be an ideal solution.  You can even build your own grow box, although that is a big project and maybe more expensive than buying a complete system.

How do I set up a T5 grow light for flowering stage? Guides for 420 Growers

The best height for a T5 grow light is about 6-8 in. above the plants, but you should increase that gap to 12 in. if your plants don’t like heat or they are in the seedling growth stage. If the T5 fixtures are at this height, the light from the bulbs will be intense enough and bright enough for plants, but the heat won’t be able to damage your plants. Some plants need less-intense light, so just monitor your plants and see what works for your indoor garden set-up.

You are almost ready to go—all that’s left is figuring out the right light cycles, and then you can turn on your lights and start growing. A light cycle refers to how many hours you keep the lights turned on for and for how many hours you leave your plants in the dark. Light cycles are used to simulate night and day. Outdoor plants get a certain amount of hours of light and dark to grow properly, and you need to simulate these conditions indoors, too.
